Adversarial prompt injection hides instructions inside content that looks completely harmless: Emails. Documents. Chat messages. Even URLs. 


When an AI assistant reads that content, it may follow the attacker’s hidden instructions without the user ever noticing. 


Because language models treat every part of an input as meaningful, they can’t reliably separate content from commands

The result? Subtle manipulation of outputs. Distorted decisions. In some cases, exposure of information the model has access to.

Researchers recently demonstrated how hidden instructions inside a crafted link could influence an AI assistant as soon as the link was opened. No malware. No code execution. Just text weaponised. It’s a reminder that if an AI system can read it, it can be influenced by it. 


How to Reduce the Risk 

A few simple habits go a long way: 

• Be cautious with unexpected links—AI tools may interpret hidden text inside them.

• Don’t send suspicious content to AI assistants for summarising or checking. 

• Watch for outputs that feel “off” or oddly detailed.

• Pause and sensecheck results before acting on them. 

• Report unusual emails or documents instead of processing them with AI.
